Jal, a new graduate of marine science, is taking a vacation cruise. The ship sinks in a sudden storm. She is saved and taken to the watery depths by two dolphins who bring her to an underwater city peopled mostly by survivors of plane crashes or ship wrecks.
Humans and dolphins can communicate telepathically after humans ingest a certain algae. They can breathe underwater after having gills cut into their necks and eating a particular algae. This algae changes the body chemistry so that humans can no longer breathe surface air and must remain underwater.
The dolchers (dolphin teachers) instruct the humans how to survive in the water. Each human has his/her own dolcher that they bond with for life.
People live in a dome on the ocean floor. The buildings, clothing, everything comes from what they can salvage from downed planes or ships.
The underwater society is similar to that of the land in that there are good and bad people. Lawbreakers are banished to an area where they are happier or the open ocean when they can’t behave.
Jal meets her soulmate, Arn, who becomes her guide to travel to other domes in search of what can reverse the effects of the algae and to educate her about her new world.

Jal, una recién graduada en ciencias marinas, está de crucero. El barco se hunde durante una tormenta repentina. Dos delfines la rescatan y la llevan a las profundidades marinas, donde encuentra una ciudad submarina habitada principalmente por supervivientes de accidentes aéreos y naufragios.
Los humanos y los delfines pueden comunicarse telepáticamente después de que los humanos ingieran ciertas algas. Pueden respirar bajo el agua tras la implantación de branquias en el cuello y la ingesta de una alga específica. Esta alga altera la química corporal, impidiendo que los humanos respiren aire de la superficie y obligándolos a permanecer bajo el agua.
Los delfines guías (dolchers) instruyen a los humanos sobre cómo sobrevivir en el agua. Cada humano tiene su propio delfín guía, con quien establece un vínculo de por vida.
Los habitantes viven en una cúpula en el fondo del océano. Los edificios, la ropa y todo lo demás proviene de los materiales que logran recuperar de aviones o barcos hundidos.
La sociedad submarina es similar a la terrestre en el sentido de que existen personas buenas y malas. Quienes infringen la ley son desterrados a una zona donde son más felices o al océano abierto cuando no se comportan adecuadamente
Jal conoce a su alma gemela, Arn, quien se convierte en su guía para viajar a otras cúpulas en busca de la forma de revertir los efectos de las algas y para enseñarle sobre su nuevo mundo.
